We are delighted to announce Adam Hennessey is the recipient of the Darbyshire Prize for Emerging Art 2015.  Adam was selected by Mark Darbyshire from participants on the Turps Painting Studio Programme 2014/15.

Adam Hennessey paints structures and spaces that allow him to meander, make links and jokes.  Whether he’s picturing objects washed up in a lobster net, a worm’s nightmare or a painting infected with mould.  They all realize a personal vision of the stuff that surrounds us.

The Darbyshire Prize originally began in 2007 as an annual award and exhibition hosted by Stroud Valley Artspace in Gloucestershire and ran until 2009.  Following a conversation between Marcus Harvey (Painter and co-founder of the Turps Painting Magazine and Art School) and Mark Darbyshire, the prize has been resurrected as an annual prize awarded to a participant on the Turps Painting Studio Programme.  The Darbyshire Prize includes a solo exhibition at Darbyshire’s London Showroom and £1,000 of Darbyshire services.

Marcus Harvey and Mark Darbyshire first met as students on the Goldsmith’s BA painting programme in the 1980’s.  During the 1990’s Darbyshire developed his career as a master frame maker and art fabricator.

‘My working life has been immersed in the London art world over the last thirty years by way of an art education, studio practice, and as an framer and art fabricator.  I am lucky enough to be surrounded by art, and it has led me to an interest in dynamic artists’ ideas.  With this in mind I came upon the opportunity to rekindle the Darbyshire Prize – this time working with Turps Art School to give one of their studio painters the opportunity of an exhibition at our London showroom along with £1000 of our services, be it stretcher/panel making or framing.  I am delighted to say this year sees Adam Hennessey picking up the award and I very much look forward to working with him toward his show.’

Turps Painting Studio Programme is an intensive one year practice based programme in a highly supportive open studio led by established painters.  Adam Hennessey was a participant on the programme from September 2014 – July 2015
