Los Angeles artist Glen Seator reconstructs everyday exterior scenes, relocating his faithful reproductions in gallery spaces. These elaborate trompe l'oeille interrupt the viewer's normal experience, often to disquieting effect. Past installations have included the replacement of a gallery exterior with a cash checking store, and the introduction into a gallery of an urban street, complete with lane markings and street signage.

For his exhibition ‘Within the Line’, Darbyshire made a full-scale reproduction of ground floor entrance and hallway of White Cube, Duke Street to be installed in the first floor gallery space.

Working closely with artist model was built off-site at Darbyshire workshops. Constructed from a variety of materials; timber framed, moulds taken from original features and cast in plaster, some features such as light switches, door furniture, entry phone were real copies, others such as terrazzo paving and stucco moulding were faked. All finished surfaces were distressed to give correct aged appearance, requiring services of specialist paint finishers. Fabricated as a multi-part flat pack to be assembled on site where final detailed work was also carried out.
